FreeState Legal Project

Issues

These individuals are at risk of discrimination in employment and housing, rejection by providers of social and medical services, police brutality, or victimization by family and peers.

FreeState’s mission is to meet these needs through direct representation, organization and education of members of the greater legal community for pro bono service, and educating LGBT individuals of their rights and the resources available to them.

A Needs Assessment Report* was conducted by an independent, outside consultant for FreeState. In this report, it was found the needs of Baltimore’s low-income LGBT community are overwhelming, compelling and apparent. This report found that LGBT youth suffer the greatest adversity, facing ostracization and abuse by families, teachers, foster parents, social workers and others responsible for their well-being. The consequences range from homelessness, to engaging in sex-work, to HIV infections and other STDs. Transgender youth suffer the most.
