Donations to FreeState Legal Project Inc. will support this organization’s hiring of an Executive Director, payment of overhead costs, and payments of legal costs aimed at advancing the rights, privileges and status of low-income LGBT clients in Maryland.
Over the past year, the FreeState project has made significant progress toward the goal of opening the first LGBT legal services center in Maryland, and one of only a couple in the entire United States. We have incorporated. We have developed a Board of Directors comprised of law professors, corporate representatives, executive directors of national non-profits, judges, public officials and others. We have secured space, rent-free, which has been offered by the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Baltimore. We have secured our 501(c)(3) status. We have active subcommittees for fundraising, governance, and program development. We have worked with a graphic design consultant to develop our organization’s image and marketing materials. We have also hired a human services consultant who has worked in conjunction with board members, and has nearly completed a needs assessment of the Greater Baltimore region’s LGBT community. And we have hired a third consultant who has worked with the board in developing a strategic plan, incorporating various goals and benchmarks. The list goes on.
Given that we have secured free office space, we envision the hiring of an executive director to be our most significant expense. In order to attract the best candidates for the position, we want to be able to guarantee at least one year of sustainability, and ideally two years. In order that our current funds be maximized, and spent wisely, we have set fundraising and other goals that we believe will ensure that sustainability. We want to meet those goals before we officially open our doors. In the meantime, when we receive notice of a low-income LGBT individual in need of help, we do our best to refer them to a competent attorney, willing to represent them pro bono.
Having said all of that, our biggest challenge – especially in a down economy – is meeting our fundraising goals. We are happy to share any information that you might request, including our strategic plan, or summaries of our fundraising plan, action plan, or mission statement.
